BUILDING OF BIG TANKERS
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, December 21. Negotiations are now taking place for the building on Tyneside of oil tankers between 50.000 and 60,000 tons to help close the economic gap of voyaging round the Cape, said Mr N. A. Gass deputy chairman of the British Petroleum Company, at the launching of the 32.000-ton tanker, British Valour, at Yarrow. It was bound to be a long time before there was any appreciable effect from this evolution in tanker construction, he said. Two tankers of 65.000 tons have been ordered for Shell tankers at Birkenhead and an order for a third is expected soon.
