Death In Desert Heat
(Rec. 11 p.m.) ALICE SPRINGS. Dec. 21. One man is dead from heat and exhaustion and another is missing in the barren desert country south of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Hopes of finding the missing man alive are dim. The dead man is Mr J. H. Adams, of Sydney. He was found lying about a mile from his truck which had bogged down in soft sand about 85 miles from Alice Springs. A full water bag was found hanging on the branch of a tree near the truck, and other water supplies were on the truck.
Mr Adams was found by a party of Public Works Department employees who discovered the bogged truck on a desert track and later found the body. Police at Alice Springs said today that the two men had been visiting Ayres rock, a place of interest noted fo” its old aboriginal rock carvings, in the desert country.
Police believe that the men tried most of yesterday to free the truck, but when they failed decided to walk for help. They think that Mr Adams, after walking over a mile, was affected by the intense heat and collapsed and died from exhaustion and thirst.
They are puzzled over the complete disappearance of the second man, who has not yet been identified.
