PUBLIC RELATIONS AT TIMARU
COUNCIL AGREES TO SUGGESTION (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, December 18. The Timaru City Council has agreed in principle with a suggestion made in a letter from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce that a public relations office for South Canterbury should be established in Timaru. Many other places, both smaller and larger than Timaru, had a public relations officer, or a public relations office, said Cr. C. R. Hervey. Other bodies in Timaru, namely the Harbour Board, the newly-formed Port Association, and the chamber, were in favour of some officer to advertise the city and district. Cr. P. W. J. Cockerill said he could agree in principle. However, the proposal could mean a financial outlay for the council of perhaps £lOOO annually. He thought the finance committee should examine the proposal. Cr. Cockerill also wanted a clear understanding of the duties involved and what a public relations officer would do. The council also supported a further suggestion by the chamber to form an advisory panel for the purpose of discusing and making a study of the future development of Caroline Bay. The council decided that the Mayor or his nominee be appointed chairman of the panel comprising representatives from the council, city architects, Caroline Bay Association, Timaru Harbour Board, city engineer's department, city reserves department, and the Chamber of Commerce.
