CURRENT NOTES

Mr Justice Adams. Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., and the president of the New Zealand Federation of the Justices of the Peace Associations (Mr W. E: Olds) were among the guests of honour who attended the annual Christmas party of the Christchurch Justices of the Peace Association. Members and guests were welcomed by the president (Mr P. A. Le Brun). Items were presented by Mrs Norman Greenslade (songs), Miss Mary Hopewell (elocutionary), Mrs Perdy Caithness (songs), and the accompanist was Mrs W. E. Olds. Christmas carols were also sung.

Miss M. Morgan, of the St. Matthew’s Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, has been awarded the Woolford Champion of Champions Cup after winning an improvisation contest. Mrs D. Woolford presented cups to all divisions for improvisation, and she also presented a larger trophy for the over-all winner.

There was a good attendance of members, husbands and friends at the Christmas party of the Bryndwr League of Mothers. Mrs O. Mitchell presided and expressed thanks to the committee and members for their help during the year. Items were given by the choir and the drama group. The programme concluded with the singing of carols. There was a large attendance of members of the league at the church parade held at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Bryndwr. An eight-year-old brownie, Shona Holland, received the silver cross for gallantry at a recent ceremony at Broadwood, Auckland, attended by brownies, guides, cubs and scouts, with their parents. Mrs M. S. Iverach, Dominion adviser to the brownie branch of the Girl Guide Association, made the presentation. Shona saved the life of Edward Walter when he was in difficulties in the Broadwood river. She saw him fall off a steep bank into deep water. She dived in from the opposite bank and held him up while waiting for help. Feeling the strain, she tried to get him to the opposite bank, but after achieving this the boy slipped in again. This time Shona held nim up until help arrived.

A Swedish physician, Dr. Boerje Ejrup, claims that a special medicine he has compounded enables tobacco addicts to stop “supplicating the weed” within two weeks. The pills have a rose colour and are known in Sweden by the name of “Lovnik.” Dr. Ejrup says experiments were conducted with 500 smokers. Fifty per cent, gave up smoking altogether after two weeks; 40 per cent, reduced their daily cigarette quota to two and 10 per cent, proved incurable. To give the cure a proper trial it is necessary to take 42 tablets at the cost of a shilling each.
