The Auckland branch of the Tourist Department has noticed a fall off in the spending by New Zealanders on holiday travel this year. When a New Zealander inquires about a hotel now, he more often asks about the tariff. It used to be a case of: “Just get me into a hotel.” He is also more selective. Although New Zealanders seem to be heading in all directions, a reduced demand this year means that the Tourist Department can find accommodation for more overseas visitors. Just now, there are numbers of travellers in the country who have come from the Olympic Games. There has been a big Auckland demand for one aspect of travel-car room on the inter-island steamers. The demand has been above normal.—(P.A.)
