CYCLING BROTHERTON NOW PROFESSIONAL
Captain Of British Olympic Team (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 18. Peter Brotherton, captain of the British cycling team at the 1956 Olympic Games, turned professional in Melbourne today. He will have his first professional racing on Wednesday night at the North Essendon board track. Brotherton, aged 25, has been one of the world’s leading all-round amateur track cyclists. He narrowly missed winning three major international championships, finishing second in the world amateur 4000 metres pursuit cycle in 1954 at Cologne, and in 1955 at Milan. He was runner-up in the 4090 metres pursuit championship at the Vancouver Empire Games in 1954. Brotherton will live in Melbourne and bring his family from London to join him.
