DISMISSALS FROM WAIPA MILL
PRODUCTION BEING REDUCED (New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Falling exports and record stocks of radiata pine are among the causes of the dismissal of 66 men from the Waipa State sawmill, said the Minister of Forests (Mr S. W. Smith) this morning. Reduced production was being planned in the new year by many radiata pine sawmillers, said Mr Smith. Waipa had found it expedient to reduce cutting more than most because it, alone of the major producers, had been sawing a large volume of small thinning logs. The product from these logs overwhelmingly comprised narrow boards in which overall production now was substantially in excess of demand.
