CHAMPAGNE STAKES AT WINGATUI
DARENAL NOW DOUBTFUL STARTER
Daren al is not a certain starter in the Champagne Stakes at Wingatui on Saturday. She was disappointing in her trial at Riccarton yesterday, and her trainer. W. A. Welton, was then doubtful if he would take her south with her stablemates, Teaka and Abou Ben Adhem. The Riccarton horseman, A. J. Stokes, will ride Darenal if she starts. Stokes has also been engaged for Teaka. C. G. Humphries travelled south yesterday with Watch and Wait, Rise and Shine, and Her Ex. These good gallopers have engagements in the main races on Saturday. Her Ex is a firm pre-post favourite for the Champagne Stakes, and Rise and Shine will be solidly supported in the Publicans’ Handicap, the second leg of the double. Riding engagements for Wingatui include:— C. McDonald: Field Chief, Smart,
Brooke. King Robin. E. G. Low: Overboard, Keep Clear, King Cassock, Netherhall. G. D. Lee: Ditched, Uproar, Master David. B. W. McDonald: Princess Neptune, Tarbillon, Relinquish. G. W. Mein: Writer, Post. D. J. Thistoll: Royal Warrant, Stradam, Abou Ben Adhem. N. Hoy: Dart Away. A. J. Stokes: Canon. Teaka, Red Tinge, Darenal. Cuban, Pen- ■ nant, Master Ascot. M. D. Alexander;!
