RELINQUISH READY FOR DUNEDIN CUP

Relinquish, a Dunedin Cup lightweight, and Tess, which will start her holiday racing at Washdyke, ran out a mile strongly in one of the best trials at Riccarton yesterday. Fast half-mile sprints by Motueka and Bagatelle also marked the training. Gallops were done about 45 feet out on the course proper in showery weather, but the going was good considering there had been much ram. Relinquish (B. W. McDonald» and Tess <E. G. Low) were on terms two lengths clear of Writer <D. J. Thistoll) finishing a mile in linin 45 2-5 sec. the last half in 52 3-ssec. Writer trailed from the start, and was no closer to Relinquish and Tess at the finish than at the half-mile.

Relinquish did most of the pacemaking, but Tess drew up near the end.

Relinquish showed zest for his task, and in his present form may be one of the best ight-weights in the Dunedin Cup.

Russleigh <M. D. Alexander) pulled up sound after running a mile in Im in 48 3-ssec, the last half brilliantly in 51 3-ssec. She was one of the early workers, and there was more rain later, but it was a very good trial. If she is all right—a foreleg has given some trouble —she will probably race at Oamaru. Curtain Raiser (G. W. Mein) ran his mile unhurriedly in lmin 52 3-5 sec, the last half in 55 2-ssec. He will do his holiday racing at the South Canterbury meeting. Hunters Praise (B. W. McDonald) sped from the mile to the half-mile in 51 3-ssec, and finished her task in lmin 46 4-ssec. Drew Out

Royal Warrant (D. J. Thistoll) had a track to his liking, and was much too good for Strada (N. Cowles) over a mile, run in lmin 50 2-ssec. Royal Warrant led over the last half-mile in 55 4-ssec, and drew out over the last furlong to finish six lengths clear.

Strada has shown his best form on firm tracks. The stablemates. Beau Chat (R. W. Gould) and Tamarisk (B. Parsons) finished seven furlongs on terms in lmin 37 2-ssec, the last four in 54 l-ssec.

Lucky Sal (D. J. Thistoll) drew up near the post to finish seven furlongs a head in front of Brown Baron (G. Lee) and about a length ahead of Demand (B. Gordon). They recorded lmin 35 4-ssec for the distance and 54sec for the last half-mile. Mark Seven (A. J. Stokes) was running on strongly half a length in front of Tarbillon (B. W. McDonald) ending seven furlongs in lmin 35 l-ssec, the last four in 53 3-ssec. McDonald will ride Tarbillon in the Berwick Hack Handicap at Wingatui. Dhofar (W. Hanlin) was restricted to lmin 39sec for seven furlongs. She is engaged in the Eulogy Stakes at Awapuni on Saturday. Meteorologist (G. W. Mein) and Teaka (A. J. Stokes) sprinted seven furlongs on terms in lmin 33 3-ssec, the last four strongly in 53 2-ssec. Teaka shaped like an early winner at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and will be a strong light-weight in the President’s Hack Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. Glen Carron (R. W. Gould) shaped well in his solo trial, recording lmin 34 3-ssec for seven furlongs, and 54sec

for the last half-mile. His second at Hororata was an improver’s effort. Shahwan’s Trial

King Robin (C. McDonald) led Shahwan (A. J. Stokes) by a neck after running seven furlongs in lmin 35 l-ssec, the last four in 53 l-ssec. King Robin had conditions to suit him.

Shahwan is in first-class order to complete his preparation for the James Hazlett Gold Cup. run on the second day of the Dunedin Cup meeting. K. J. Thomson will take him south on Friday.

Melinda Jane (W. Hanlin) sprinted six furlongs in lmin 20 2-ssec, the last four in 53 2-ssec.

Vivien Leigh <M. D. Alexander), a fit youngster for the South Canterbury meeting, could have bettered her 55 l-ssec for half a mile. Cill-Dara (E. G. Low) was not allowed to show his best speed while running from the half-mile. He took 56 2-ssec.

t Bon Trip (G. W. Mein) was shaken up to , beat his stablemate, Golden Demonic (M. D. Alexander) from the half-mile by a neck in 51 2-ssec. The stablemates. Copenhagen (W. Hanlin) and Coq d’Or (A. J. Stokes) recorded 55sec for half a mile, which they ended abreast. Motueka CM. D. Alexander) pleased in his semi-final trial for the D J.C. Publicans’ Handicap; he dashed home from the half-mile in 50 3-ssec, a very good gallop under the conditions.

Motueka has been racing consistently, and an early win would be well-deserved.

Falstaff (R. E. Humphries) and Water Boy (G. W. Mein) ran half a mile on terms in 55 2-ssec. Water Boy appears to have thrived since he last raced, and if he recaptures his two-year-old form he will be an early winner for Mrs K. McKenzie. Bagatelle Shows Speed Rio Negro (P. Wilde) sprinted her half-mile in 54 3-ssec. Bagatelle (C. McDonald) ran half a mile attractively in 50 4-ssec. She will race at Washdyke, and should be a match for the best of the hack sprinters. Post (G. W. Mein) led Luxurious (D. J. Thistoll) by a length ending half a mile in 55sec. It was a more encouraging run by Post, which lugged badly in his gallop last Saturday. Gay Tommy (R. W. Gould) beat Darenal (A. J. Stokes) from the halfmile by two lengths in 52 l-ssec. Demolish (C. McDonald) and Shame (D. J. Thistoll) finished half a mile on terms in 52 3-ssec. Whistlin’ Thru (A. Maddicks) was shading Career (G. W. Mein) ending a smart sprint. They recorded 54 l-ssec for half a mile, but did not work up npuch speed over the first furlong. Career is a two-year-old filly by Lucky Bag from Deraa, owned by Mr H. D. Greenwood. She shows ability. Princess Neptune (B. W. McDonald) led Lammas (N. Cowles) by three lengths, and could have widened that margin, ending half a mile in 53sec. Princess Neptune is a fit lightweight for the Publicans’ Handicap at Wingatui.

Shoal (A. J. Stokes) sprinted her half-mile in 55 2-ssec.
