QUIET IN IRELAND

(Rec. 7 p.m.) BELFAST, Dec. 16. Action by both Irish Governments appeared tonight to have checked at least temporarily the wave of attacks by members of the Irish Republican Army. South of the border, Irish Republican police and troops arrested 13 young men early today in a disused farmhouse at Knockavillon, near the border with Northern Ireland. No arms were found and the men offered no resistance.

The men were later released after promising to return to their homes in the Kerry, Cork and W T aterford areas.

With troops and police guarding both sides of the border tonight, immediate I.R.A. raids are considered unlikely. Reuter’s Dublin correspondent says that these measures have upset the I.R.A. plans. The I.R.A. was believed to have mobilised several units which the police hope to discover and disperse soon.
