CHRISTMAS PARTIES

Officers of the Royal yacht Britannia were guests of honour at a Christmas party held by the council of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society at Elizabeth House last evening. One of the officers, Lieu-tenant-Commander M. Wall, is a nephew of Sir Charles Ponsonby, chairman of the Royal Empire Society in London. Sir Charles Ponsonby visited the society in Christchurch last year. Mr R. R. Livingstone, president of the Canterbury branch of the society, and Mrs Livingstone received about 90 members and guests, including the presidents of the English Speaking Union, the Overseas League, the Navy League, and the Victoria League. During the evening carols were sung against the background of a lighted Christmas tree and other decorations. Business Women’s Dinner Miss H. Melville (president) and Miss B. Wood (past president) welcomed about 40 members and their friends at a Christmas dinner party held by the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club last evening. A specially invited guest was Miss F. Connor, a member of the Elgin Business and Professional Women’s Club in Scotland. After dinner, Christmas carols were sung, and films of New Zealand scenery were shown by Miss Kennah Moore. Business Women A Christmas party was held by members of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club on Saturday evening, when the president (Mrs W. G. Jenkins) welcomed 64 members, guests and artists. Carols were sung by candlelight and Mrs Jenkins announced in her Christmas message that the club had made a donation of £lO to the project for establishing a Sheltered Workshop for handicapped young persons. Items were given by the following artists: Mrs R. Crocker and Mrs Norman Greenslade (vocal solos). Dr. Needham (violin solos) and Mrs Frank Cooper (humorous recitations). Mrs W. E. Olds was the accompanist. During the evening gifts were distributed to all guests.
