The Cambridge Terrace Methodist Sunday Schoolroom was gaily decorated with flowers for the Christmas party of the Christchurch Central branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. There was a large attendance of members. •Mrs I. Wilson, who presided, led devotions, welcomed guests, and spoke on alcoholism in New Zealand. She said that one-sixth of the 20,000 alcoholics were women, many of whom were aged between 22 and 24. Members were presented with gifts. Items were given by Mrs Wilson (piano solos and songs), Miss M. Thomas (piano solos), Misses Wilmore and Kathleen Mangels (songs), and Miss Mangels (monologues). Members sang Christmas carols, and the tea hostess was Mrs J. McGregor.

A party of six Samoan girl guides and rangers arrived at Auckland by Tasman Airways plane on Saturday to attend a Baden Powell centennial camp near Marton next month. About 1000 guides will attend the camp, including Fijian and Rarotongan parties, which are expected this week. Aged between 16 and 19. the Samoan girls will stay with Auckland guides and their families until all groups assemble toward the end of the month. The guides will travel by special train to Marton. — (P.A.) Mrs W. Black presided at the Christmas party of the Shirley Women’s Bowling Club held recently. She thanked members of the women’s and men’s clubs for their co-operation and extended the compliments of the season. The patroness (Mrs J. B. Johns) also spoke. The president of the men’s club (Mr G. Woods) thanked the women for their help during the season. The vice-presi-dent (Mrs J. Silvester) presented Mrs Black with a barometer in the shape of a ship’s wheel, and Mrs J. V. Wiliams with a cup, saucer, and plate. A presentation was also made to the green representative (Mr E. C Hyde). Mr and Mrs E. Horsfall, who were celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding, were both presented with bouquets. Items were given by Messrs G. Woods and C Shaw and Mrs Mclntosh. Mesdames Wilson and Collins conducted carol and community singing, and the accompanists were Mesdames McIntosh and Shaw.

Many persons of all ages, including many from other denominations, attended the Heathcote Valley Young Wives’ Christmas party. After the opening hymn and prayers had been taken by the vicar, sprays were presented to all present. Games were played by the younger members and a minstrel show was presented by the committee. Before supper Father Christmas and his fairy godmother arrived with a sleigh load of gifts for those present. The evening concluded with a presentation of a Christmas tableau and the singing of carols by candlelight around the Nativity scene. A demonstration on making Christmas decorations was given by Mrs Berry at the December meeting of the Riccarton-Sockburn Garden Club. Before afternoon tea was served. Christmas carols were sung. Whitford cut the cake which had been prepared by the president (Mrs E. McNish) at the Christmas party of the United Croquet Club held recently. Members and representatives from the bowling section were welcomed by Mrs McNish. who extended the season s greetings. To those who were due to depart for the New Zealand championships and other tournaments, she wished every success.

St. Paul’s Theatre, Papanui, entertained representatives of other parish groups and other drama groups at a Christmas party held recently. The group presented a one act play, me Mrs Halkett,”. produced by Jane Riggir. Those taking part were; Nesta Clinton. Helen Burrow. Anita McGill. Diana Isaac and Margaret Ferner. Games and carol sinking concluded the programme and this was followed by supper.

The Christmas party of the Halswell Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs H. Brake, Junction road. Mrs F. Chapman presided and welcomed representatives from the Cashmere. Tai Tapu, Leestbn. The Spreydon branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers held its Christmas party at the home of Mrs C. Perry recently. Gifts were exchanged and games and competitions were played.
