ALLEGED THEFT OF PETROL

CONSTABLE FOUND NOT GUILTY (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Dec. 17. There was suspicion, grave suspicion, but the evidence was not adequate, said Mr A. W. Yortt, S.M., dismissing in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court today a charge against a police constable, Leo Oscar Francis Jacobsen, aged 32, of stealing five and a half gallons of petrol from a police car. Jacobsen pleaded guilty to a second charge, of having 32 gallons of petrol stored at his home without having .a permit to have more than the eight gallons allowed private persons under the Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act. On this charge he was fined £5. Six witnesses —all policemen—were called by Senior-Detective P. C. Smeaton, who prosecuted. The theft was alleged to have occurred on the night of December 6, when Jacobsen was watch-house keeper from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The ca? stands in a garage beside the police station. Because it may be needed at any time, the car is unlocked, and the garage doors are open.
