BALMORAL FOREST FIRE
Sir, —The report of the finding of the inquiry into the Balmoral fire was not made public. The local opinion seemed at the time to be that the fire would not have got into the forest had the live embers from the first fire been extinguished with water instead of using a bulldozer to try I to cover them with earth. There is l
an old proverb, “Let sleeping dogs lie.” I give a new one: “Don’t use a bulldozer on a windy day to extinguish a fire when it is near a valuable forest full of dry tinder.” Water is a safer method.—Yours, etc., LORD FIRESTICKS. Culverden, December 14, 1956.
