CHILDREN’S CALF CLUB COMPETITION

FINAL JUDGING AT SHOW GROUNDS

Seventeen children from country primary schools brought calves to the Addington Show Grounds yesterday for the final judging in the boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubs’ annual calf competition. The calves represented the best projects in calf-rearing from groups of schools in districts from Oxford to Leeston. With points assessed on care and attention, tractability, dairy type, and record books compiled by the children, the judge (Mr J. J. Hughey) awarded the Tai Tapu Central Dairy Company’s cup for the best calf to Theby Frampton, of Ohoka, who scored 91 points. Other placings were: Peter Rainey (Ohoka) and Lorraine Adams (Leeston), 90 points (equal), 2; Marior. Mclntosh (Prebbleton). 87J, 3; Lois Thornley (Greenpark). 861, 4. Congratulating all the entrants, Mr Hughey said that it was the best line of calves he had seen in the competition and the calves were a credit to the children and the parents who had encouraged them. The competition was organised for the Canterbuy Education Board by its agricultural instructor (Mr B. B. Blackmore).
