TUBERCULIN TESTS OF COWS

NEW ZEALAND SAID TO BE LAGGING "The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, December 16. “I am surprised the New Zealand Government has not made any definite move towards tuberculin-tested milk,” Mr Robert Dunlop, a Scottish farmer who has been judging Ayrshire cattle at the Southland Centennial Show, said today. “It is something the dairy industry has to face before long.” he said. “New Zealand is probably the most backward country in this field, and unless something is done immediately, it will become a serious problem.” It had become a problem in the United Kingdom before the Government had granted a bonus on milk from tuberculin tested cows. Mr Dunlop said. This had given incentive to breeders. “Where cattle are kept outside, as in New Zealand, it should be a comparatively easy job to have the milk tested.,” he said. “This country has a continually rising population, and before long the demand for tested milk will reach tremendous proportions.” Mr Dunlop is a former president of the Ayrshire Cattle Society of the United Kingdom. He has a herd of 300 Ayrshires and 40 Galloways on his estate. He is a prominent exhibitor at United Kingdom shows.
