Aid For Workers In Hungary
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, December 14. Australia’s national trade unions may open a fund to help the Hungarian workers. Many Federal union leaders welcomed today the strong denunciation of Russian oppression by the Australian Council of Trade Unions president, Mr Albert Monk, the industrial writer of the Melbourne “Herald” reported. One of the main reasons for Mr Monk’s visit overseas was to get a first-hand report on the international situation. And what Mr Monk found overseas shocked him, the correspondent said. He said: “I have rarely heard Mr Monk speak so strongly as he did on his return to Melbourne yesterday. Mr Monk normally is cautious in his judgment, slow to condemn. But the massacre of the workers in Hungary stirred him deeply. “It was underlined by the demonstrations by workers in many European countries during Mr Monk's visit,” the correspondent said.
