FORMER FINNISH PRESIDENT
MR J. K. PAASIKIVI DEAD
(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) HELSINKI, December 15.
Mr J. K. Paasikivi. former President of Finland, died in Helsinki yesterday. He was 86.
Mr Paasikivi, though not a man of the Left, knew how to talk with the Russians. Four times he negotiated with Moscow. Once, in 1939. he failed and the Soviet-Finnish war broke out. But on the other occasions the world marvelled at the relative moderation of the terms he obtained. He opposed Finland’s entering World War II on the side of Germany, and in 1944 visited Russia again asking for peace. As a result Russia agreed to allow Finland to maintain her internal independence and democratic institutions.
