BEVERIDGE TROPHY RACE

MANY BOATS CAPSIZE IN ROUGH CONDITIONS Conditions were boisterous on Saturday when the annual Beveridge trophy was sailed in a north-easterly wind. The trophy race, which is held under the auspices of the Christchurch Yacht Club, is open to all yachts registered with an Estuary club. The start was delayed for 30 minutes or more due to a number of boats capsizing., Competitors from the Mount Pleasant Club were also delayed by the strong wind. There were 20 starters over three laps of a triangular course. From the start, it was obvious that there would not be many finishers, as the seas were too much for some yachts. Melody, sailed by B. Loader, was unlucky, capsizing when it was in the lead. Horizon, sailed by Cliff Papps, worked its way through the fleet and went on to win. Among the skippers who either capsized or struck trouble, before the race started, were Impulse (B. Wall), Pinta (P. McKeogh), Contessa (R. Bassett), and Rapture (J. Nicholson). Results were:—Horizon (C. Papps) 1. Mystere (D. Nixon) 2, Koala (C. Barter) 3. PLEASANT POINT CLUB The Pleasant Point Yacht Club sailed second heats in contests for three trophies during the week-end. .Results were:— Matheson Rose Bowl.—Vision (A. Bur-

gess) 1, Fantasy (R. O’Brien) 2, Feather (R. Frost) 3. Clements Cup.—Waterwitch (D. Dickey) 1, Dawn (D. Nixon) 2, Tictac (J. Crombie) 3. Woods Trophy, P Class.—lan Hawes 1.
