Ballistic Missile Development
(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 13. The United States Air Force had reached the firing stage in its development of the first model of a ballistic missile capable of travelling 1500 miles, the United Press reported today.
The Air Force either had fired such a missile within the last few days at Patrick Air Force base, in Florida, or was about ready to fire one, the report said. The test device was a prototype of the Air Force’s range ballistic missile, known as Thor. The scheduled firing indicated the Air Force was further along thar commonly supposed in development of the weapon, the report said. It probably would be several years before the armed forces were equipped with missiles capable of spanning continents and wiping cities off the map with their hydrogen bomb war heads as huge technical problems were involved. the report said. Both the Air Force and the Army are engaged in development of an intermediate range ballistic missile. Present plans call for it to be followed with a long-range missile that will travel at least 5000 miles.
