AKAROA CLUB’S 50™ ANNIVERSARY Fifty years ago at Akaroa. a public meeting was called in February to discuss the formation of a bowling club. After it had been decided to form the club, land for a green was acquired, and the work of laying l it was put in hand immediately. Opening day was held on November 15, 19 *rhis week-end the club will hold its jubilee celebrations. There will be a fours tournament for former members and members tomorrow, and a banquet and conversazione in the evening. Saturday and Sunday will be taken up with an open tournament, at which many Christchurch bowlers will compete. The first president of the club was Mr G. Armstrong, who was then Mayor of Akaroa. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes was elected the club’s first patron. He held this office until his death recently. One of the foundation members of the club, Mr E. Wethey, is still an active bowler, and is at present playing with the St. Albans Cl Through the years, the club has been host to many notable guests from all parts of the Dominion and overseas. The Akaroa club has produced some verv fine bowlers, the most prominent probably being A. G. Shuttleworth, who once gained fourth place in ‘he Dominion tournament pairs, and in 19S0 second in the South Island centennial championship singles. Shottieworth has represented the Christchurch Bowling Centre on many occasions. Others to win representative badges are W. B. Ramsay. A. E. Kingston, and W. E. Brown.
