ASSAULT ON POLICE SERGEANT
ACCUSED FINED £lO (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, December 12. A 39-year-old sawmill hand and freezing worker, Leonard Lancelot Craig, of Hastings, was convicted and fined £lO in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of assaulting Sergeant R. J. Bryant, in Hastings, on November 23. Craig pleaded not guilty. The charge arose after a scuffle between Sergeant Bryant and Craig in a cell at the Hastings Police Station. The defence alleged that the sergeant struck Craig twice across the face before Craig retaliated and struck the sergeant. Craig had been arrested for drunkenness earlier. The evidence was completed last Tuesday, after a hearing before Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., which occupied 10 hours. The Magistrate reserved his decision and adjourned the case until yesterday.
