ADDINGTON MARKET

VALUES FOR FAT CATTLE EASE

Entry Of More Than 600 Head

BIG OFFERING OF FAT LAMBS

With an entry of more than 600. most classes of fat cattle were cheaper by about £2 a head at Addington stock market yesterday. Store cattle, however, continued to meet a demand at firm rates.

The fat lamb entry was more than three times as large as last week, and as a result many light lambs had to be sent to the store pens or held over for topping off.

Best quality and medium quality fat hoggets were also cheaper, and light and plain sorts also found their way to the store section. In the fat sheep section, both heifers and ewes met a slightly better demand. A substantial selection of lambs met a good demand in the store pens. Few pens realised under 50, and some sales were made at more than 60s. STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry was of modest proportions. It totalled 3713 head compared with 3623 last week. Almost half of the selection was made up of lambs. In the entry were 674 wether hoggets, 502 ewe hoggets. 1630 lambs, 289 ewes with 289 lambs at foot, 142 ewes and 187 wethers. The hogget entry was one of the smallest for many weeks, but values for all classes were barely up to late rates and could be quoted about Is a head easier. The best of the wether hoggets sold up to 655. This price was paid for 75 Romneys from Adams Bros. (Sheffield), and the same vendors sold another 78 at 63s 6d. The pick of the selection of wether hoggets realised from 60s to 655, with good at 55s to 595, and average and medium at 49s to 545. Among the small ewe hogget offering best sorts fetched from 74s to 81s 6d, with the balance of the offering realising from 45s to 61s. The top price was paid for 60 Romney cross ewe hoggets from Rakaia. Sales included:—

Collie (Rangiora), 41 hoggets at 495.

A feature of the market was the sale of lambs. For the time of the year the offering was a large one. Very many of the lambs were about the killable stage, and a good many of them were bought for early killing so that the sale could hardly be taken as a fair indication of store lamb values. The market was strong and hardly a pen sold at less 'han 50s. The best of the selection ranged from 59s to 635, with good at 55s 6d to 58s, and average at 50s to 545. Others sold down to 42s 6d. Top honours went to the Decanter Bay Farm, which w r as paid 63s for a pen of 78 Southdowns and 61s for 80 Romney whether lambs. Among sales were:—

i H. Matson and Company, Ltd., sold, on | account of Miss Jean Anderson (Charteris Bay), 100 Down cross lamb at 595, 38 at 53s 6d; C. Wallis (Cass Bay), 134 lambs at 545; C. E. There were few quotable lines in the adult sheep market. A few woolly ewes with lambs fetched from 47s to 52s 6d, and shorn ewes with lambs sold at 38s to 44s 6d all counted, with a few tail-end lots down to 255. Sales included:— New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association sold: on account of G. J. Giddings (Greendale). 34 ewes and 58 lambs at 50s 6d; W. Hole (Ohoka), 96 Merino wethers at 11s.

Banks (Greenpark), 51 two-tooth wethers at 61s; Balcairn client, 57 shorn ewes at 25s 6d; D. Duff, 60 shorn ewes and 69 lambs at 44s 6d. FAT LAMBS Last week there was a modest entry of 318 head in the fat lamb market, but yesterday’s yarding totalled 1106. The result was a marked weakening both in demand and prices, and anything on the light and unfinished side—being obviously not wanted—was dispatched to the store pens, or held over for topping-off. The best of the lambs held well to schedule rates, but the others were cheaper. Top price went to P. Symes (Halswell), who sold 11 at 70s Id. Values were: Extra prime lambs, 67s Id to 70s Id. FAT HOGGETS At 1560 the entry of fat hoggets was only nine behind last week’s big yarding, and the quality, except for a few particularly good lines, was not up to late standards. Hoggets in the top class were 2s to 3s cheaper, medium quality sheep 4s to 6s down, and lighter sorts (which were unsuitable for the trade) had to be relegated to the store pens. Top price was 77s Id. and it was secured by R. H. Maidens (Ashburton), who sold 27 at this figure. This price, however, was not a true reflection of the market, most values being well below this figure. Values ■were:— Extra prime hoggets, 69s Id to 77s Id. Prime medium. 62s Id to 67s Id. Prime light. 58s Id to 61s Id. Among sales were:—

FAT SHEEP The entry of fat sheep again showed little variation. A total of 2169 was penned, against 2040 last week. The sale was satisfactory in that, although there was no appreciable increase in values, last week’s decline was arrested. Best wethers met a slightly firmer demand. - ith prices for the best up by about Is 6d. Prime Medium and prime lighter sorts experienced a similar sale to last week, and were in slightly keener demand. The market for ewes was perhaps just a bit brighter, with no marked variation in prices, save that heavyweight ewes (which happened to be in short supply) sold particularly well. The market for wethers was topped by G. J. Francis (Halswell), who sold a line of 62 at 67s Id to 78s Id. with 12 at the higher price. The market for ewes was topped by the estate of W. Stone (Hororata) with a sale of 27 at 50s Id to 52s Id, with nine at the higher nrice These sheep, being an exceptionally attractive line of very early-shorn ewes, could not be relied upon to afford a true basis of values. STORE CATTLE The store cattle sale was a fairly sound one with values generally firm on late rates, and quality cattle selling remarkably well in relation to current fat values. Starky (Whitecliffs), 11 two-year-old Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn steers at £2O 3s 6d; estate S. DAIRY CATTLE Not more than 30 head of cattle were yarded in the dairy section, and they were of only average quality, but in spite of this the sale was generally fully firm to a shade better.

The top price of the day was £35 10s, paid for one Shorthorn cross heifer, which had calved. It realised £35 10s. Best second, third, and fourth calvers realised from £24 to £3O, with the balance of the yarding selling down to £l2 10s. The pick of the heifers made from £2O to £26, with the remainder selling at down to £l5.

VEALERS One of the biggest yardings for about six weeks came before buyers in the veal pens. At the outset values were about on a par with the last sale, but towards the end the big entry began to tell. Sales became more difficult to make, and rough sorts were back about 30s a head.

Values were:—Large runners. £l6 18s 6d to £22 Is: good heavy vealers, £l4 to £l6 18s 6d; medium-weight good vealers. £ll 18s 6d to £l3 18s 6d: lighter good vealers, £lO 18s 6d to £ll 18s 6d; rough heavy sorts. £l3 8s 6d to £l6; medium-weight rough sorts, £ll to £l2 18s 6d; and lighter rough sorts. £9 to £lO 18s 6d; very light rough. £7 to £8 18s 6d; spring vealers, £6 8s 6d to £ll 18s 6d; and smaller calves, 50s to £5 18s 6d.
