DECENTRALISATION OF FIRE SERVICES

Sir, —Mr Forbes, a member of the Fire Board, as a ratepayer, questions the decentralisation plan. As a ratepayer, I ask why, if the high values of this area necessitate sparing use of the land, so many sections recently occupied by homes are now occupied by packed and parked cars. Are these, plus possible traffic congestion (which should be controlled), to be allowed to cause the removal of fire protection from the valuable central area? One hesitates to contemplate what might happen in the centre of the city if assistance, required at an instant’s notice, had to come from a mile inward through traffic. If the central station is a danger to children, let it be manned by single men.—Yours, etc., WAYS AND MEANS. December 12, 1956.
