RUSSIAN CONSULAR OFFICE CLOSED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8. p.m.) CANBERRA, Dec. 11. The Soviet has closed the consular office w'hich it set up in Melbourne for the Olympic Games. The two officials who conducted the office, Mr D. Zaikin and Mr Y. Filimonov, are on their way back to Russia This was announced today by officials of the External Affairs Department.
The opening of the office was a special arrangement arising from the presence of the Soviet team at the Games. , , The Soviet has been without diplomatic representation in Australia since March, 1954, when relations between the two countries were disrupted over the defection of the Embassy officials. Mr Vladimir Petrov and his wife. Although no approaches have been made to the Australian Government in the last few weeks, there has been speculation that the presence of Russian consular officials in Melbourne during the Games may lead to an eacly resumption of diplomatic relations between Australia and the Soviet.
