Britain And Dollars
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, December 11. Britain and the Commonwealth must force an economy which would be free from economic subservience to the dollar, Lord Balfour of Inchrye said in London today. Lord Balfour is president of the British Empire League and Empire Industries Association. He told the annual meeting of the league and association that apart from gratitude for aid given, there could be felt in Britain “an upsurge of public resentment at Britain’s present dollar dependence.”
Lord Balfour* suggested the setting up of a Parliamentary body representing a bi-partisan Imperial economic policy. He said that such a body would find a vast field of work in the proposed European free trade area. “We should aim at getting Commonwealth support for a Commonwealth approach to the European project instead of a purely British approach,” he said.
