JAPAN’S U.N. SEAT
Security Council Vote Today
(Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 12. The Security Council will meet today to reconsider Japan’s application for admission to the United Nations.
If the 11-nation council endorses her candidacy, Japan is expected to be formally voted into membership by the General Assembly in plenary session later in the day. The council last considered Japan’s application a year ago. when the Soviet Union vetoed a United States amendment to include her with 16 other countries, all of which were admitted in a “package deal.” As part of the “ecent peace settlement between Japan and the Soviet Union, the Russians agreed to support her admission and the Japanese mission appeared confident today that there would be no opposition.
The Soviet Union is sponsoring reconsideration of Communist Outer Mongolia at today’s meeting, but observers said it seemed unlikely that this applicant would receive the required seven affirmative votes in the Security Council for endorsement. China vetoed Outer Mongolia’s application last year.
