BACK PAY FOR NAVY
MUCH EXTRA WORK INVOLVED (New Zealand Press Association)
tdt WELLINGTON, November. 27. More than 35.000 individual calculationB are being made at the Navy Office, Wellington, in preparation for paying out the recently announced services pay increases. The increases were back-dated to April 1 and are being paid in two stages. The first covers the back pay for the last two months and is being done in ships and shore establishments. The amount due for the previous six months is being calculated for the entire Navy by the Accounts Branch at Navy Office. This involved the compilation of a completely new naval pay code, covering 12 closely typed pages. Two hundred and fifty copies were produced for distribution throughout the fleet, including the Royalist in the South Atlantic and the frigate Kaniere in the Far East. This code is now being applied to the pay cards of all men, including those who have left the Navy in the last eight months. In addition to finding the back pay due, social security and superannuation adjustments must be made before the more than 3000 pay authorities can be prepared. Nevertheless, it is expected that payment will be completed well before Christmas.
