ARMY TRAINING AT TEKAPO
South Island Units In Camp Between 1000 and 1200 men are expected to take part in three training exercises to be held at Tekapo Military Camp, while South Island Territorial units are there this summer. At the week-end, troops of the Ist Canterbury Regiment moved in. The main party travelled in nearly 150 vehicles —80 of them from Christchurch. Otago-Southland and NelsonWest Coast-Marlborough regiments will follow later. Relief of troops in the line will be the aim of the field exercises, and an “enemy force’’ will be provided to harass the defending units. Each battalion will have a two-day field exercise under the control of 3 Infantry Brigade. Vehicles which moved to Tekapo during the week-end will remain there until the last troops move out, in late February. Until then Territorials will return by train.
ARMY-NAVY COMBINED EXERCISE A combined Army-Navy exercise to provide training in the control of shipping entering a port under wartime conditions will be held in Lyttelton Harbour on Saturday. The Canterbury division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve and 11 Coast Regiment, Royal New Zea-
land Artillery, will be taking part. A small calibre shoot will be held at Godley Head on Sunday by 11 Coast Regiment. Three-pounder field guns will be used, and the targets will be towed by the Royal New Zealand Navy.
