JUNIOR CHAMBER INTERNATIONAL
OVERSEAS DELEGATES IN CHRISTCHURCH WELCOME BY MAYOR Sixteen representatives of junior chambers of commerce in various | parts of the world, six accompanied [ by their vflves, were welcomed to i Christchurch yesterday at a recep- 1 tion arranged by the Canterbury Junior Chamber. They have been : on a tour of the South Island after: the Junior Chamber International' conference which concluded in Wellington last Wednesday. The overseas delegates were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), the president of the Canterbury Junior Chamber (Mr P. H. Rose), and the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr W. G. V. Fernie). Messrs D. Pogue, of Calgary, Canada. M. Pitt, of Essendon, and A. R. MacLeod, ot Glasgow, replied on behalf of the delegates. After outlining some of the attributes of Christchurch and its development, Mr Macfarlane said the development of business, commerce and industry had been associated with the development of city and province. The Canterbury Chamber of Com- . merce . and the Junior Chamber of Commerce had played their part in the development. “Sometimes we do not agree with their pronouncements and often friendly arguments arise be- ‘ tween the powers that be and the , Chamber of Commerce. But it is their job on behalf of their members to put forward those pronounce- ’ ments.”
Mr Macfarlane said that international understanding was very important at this time when wa r seemed to be continually threatening. “We want international understanding among business communi ■ ties. If our way of life is to survive. then we need not only under standing among business representatives but also among all those who du not want to see any form of dictatoiship forced on us. I would plead for international understanding among junior chambers of commerce.” Free Enterprise’s Part
Referring to the creed of the Junior Chamber, he said he believed free enterprise had played an important part in the development of the community. In Christchurch, whenever there was any form of community activity where they could assist, they had given freely of their services. He had found them most helpful and he was sure they would con tinue to give, help in the future. Mr Fernie said he was delighted so many delegates had found it possible to visit the South Island. A large number of members of the ; junior chamber had later become members of the senior chamber in their own right. The senior cham- ’ ber had the greatest co-operation from the junior chamber as an organisation. 1 Mr Pogue presented Mr Rose with ; a Calgary pin which he said was in lieu of the usual gift from Calgary '—a 10-gallon stetson. He had lost one on the way to New Zealand Messrs Pitt and MacLeod praised ■ the hospitality they had received m • the Dominion. Overseas delegates who attended 1 were Messrs J. Guy (Launceston), R. 1 Horn (Mackay, Queensland), RHorne (Launceston). A. R. MacLeod (Glasgow). A. Pitman (Roma, Queensland). A. King (Roma), R. Ramsay (Melbourne), R. White (Melbourne). F. Cook (Melbourne), a. Whiteside (Melbourne), C. Sykes (Melbourne), M. Pitt (Essendon), J Gibson (Fortitude Valley, Queensland). D. Joy (Melbourne), D. Pogue (Calgary), and Miss Eiko Ohyama (Tokyo). , Since the conclusion of the conference the party has visited Dunedin, the lakes district, Central Otago and Ashburton, where they spent Sunday night as the guests of the Ashburton Junior Chamber. After the reception yesterday, they were taker on sightseeing tours about Chris.church evening they w.eie the guests or Mr P. B. Watts, immediate past president of Junior Chamber International. Most of them wil» leave this morning.
