CURRENT NOTES
Members of the garden circle of the Royal Empire Society held a Christmas party. Mrs R. C. Sarjeant presided and welcomed friends and the guest demonstrator, Mrs H. E. Radley. Competitions resulted:—A class: Mrs Sarjeant 1, Mrs A. F. Excell 2, Mrs I. Hancock 3. One flag iris: Mrs J. Powell 1, Mrs D. E. Ames 2, Mrs A. F. Excell 3. Best rose: Mrs Sarjeant 1, Mrs H. Fraer 2, Mrs Ames 3. Mrs Drayton’s prize for best floral decorated hat: Mrs Bushell. A late afternoon party on Saturday, arranged by the Avonside Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association, was held at the home of Mr and Mrs P. D. Shea, Bristol street. The entrance hall and two large reception rooms were attractively decorated with bowls of roses, delphiniums, and rhododendrons. Misses K. Leonard, E. B. Baxter, and D. Chapman (vice-presidents) were guests of honour of the association. Members were received by Miss Rae Loader (president), who wore a reseda green grosgrain sheath frock with diamente clips at the low neckline, and a small black palm straw hat. She was assisted by Mrs Shea, the association’s secretary (Mrs E. Nicholls), and other executive members. Mrs Shea’s strapless frock of emerald green and white jacquard was made with a tight fitting bodice and a bouffant skirt. A full skirted frock of black tie silk shot in gold spot effect with a draped bodice was worn by Mrs E. Nicholls. Her small hat of black velvet was covered in gold net. The social and entertainment committees of the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club provided a high tea on Saturday for 24 elderly residents in Miss E. E. Williams’s Eventide Home in Gloucester ‘street. After tea a short programme of entertainment was given by Mrs H. Reeve and Miss M. Cocker, assisted by club members.
