THIRD COMPETITION ROUND

The third round of the Suburban Cricket Association's competitions was commenced on Saturday. i Scoring was slow at Beckenham Park, I where only 151 runs were scored in the afternoon. Beckenham batted first, and could make only 77, but Papanui was out for 71. At Sumner New Brighton scored 136, and at stumps Sumner had lost four wickets for 85. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) BRISBANE, Nov. 18. The spin bowler, J. Freeman, caused Western Australia to collapse early in its first innings of the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland yesterday. Western Australia lost four wickets for 45 in reply to Queensland's 389. Freeman took three wickets for 15 runs off nine overs.

The first Western Australian wicke' fell at 15, and the next three fell without a run being scored.

Queensland, three for 201 at stumps on Friday, added 188 runs yesterday. A fine fourth wicket partnership between Jack McLaughlin and Peter Burge was worth 184. but the remaining five Queensland batsmen made only 43 between them.

The scores, at stumps yesterday were: Queensland, first innings 389 (Burge 105, McLaughlin 93; Preen four for 69, Shepherd one for 3); Western Australia, lour for 45 (Freeman three for IB).
