ATHLETICS Miss F. McBeath Breaks 880yds Record Again

For the second time in a fortnignt. Miss Fay Mcßeath (Toe H> broke the Canterbury women’s 880 yards record. Her time of 2min 21.8 sec. an improvement of nearly 4sec, was the result of “even pace” running Poor pace judgment has probably retarded the improvement of times in women’s distance ,races more than lack of training. Miss Mcßeath’s excellent improve ment however, may be attributed not so much to sound knowledge of pace as to a happy combination of circumstances which lead to a slower speed than usual being set over the early part of the race. Two weeks ago. Miss Mcßeath had beaten the previous record holder. Miss K. Hames, by trailing for most of the race and finishing strongly. Saturday’s race was virtually a match affair with only Miss Hames and Miss Mcßeath as competitors, neither wanting to give any advantage by taking the lead and as a result the first lap was run in about 71sec. Poor tactics by Miss Hames who ran wide on Miss Mcßeath s shoulder during the second lap. must have taken its toll by the time it came to the final sprint. Miss Hames may have had better fortune had she remained behind or when she did move up have made a bolder bid. Sprint Record Equalled The inter-secondary schools sprint champion. D. Davison (Toe H), equalled the Canterbury junior 220 yards record of 22.8 sec. which he will now share with K. Beardsley (Technical), a 1950 Empire Games representative, and I. Coates (Westonian). Davison equalled the interachools record, also 22.8 sec, at the end of October. On both occasions Davison had to contend with a head wind. Shortly to become a senior athlete. B. W. H. McStay ran his second best two miles, recording 9min 4.2 sec. McStay s best time, 9min 39sec, was done when he won a senior race at Lancaster Park at the American meeting last December. McStay s time on Saturday was less than five seconds outside the Canterbury record held by Kerry Williams, at 9min 36.8 sec. McStay needed to average 72sec for his eight laps to beat the record, but as so often is the case, even with more experienced runners. McStay allowed his pentup enthusiasm to carry him round the first lap in Msec—about six seconds faster than would generally be considered necessary—and this had an adverse effect on him in the latter stages of the race. SHOT PUT RECORD MISS SLOPER SETS NEW FIGURE Miss Valerie Sloper on Saturday put the shot 49ft BJin —44 in further than the distance achieved by her previous best competition throw, which now awaits notification for a New Zealand record. On Saturday Miss Sloper was having her final competition at Rugby Park before leaving for Melbourne. Her success came with the fifth put. Her worst put was 45ft Uin, her other four were all in the 46ft bracket. It is a pity Miss Sloper was not able to better 50 feet in official competition, for she has consistently done so during the week when she has been putting from the cinder circle at Ensors road. Her best performance was on Friday when she did 51ft Bin. Her 49ft B£in from the slower grass circle at Rugby Park must have given Miss Sloper considerable satisfaction, however.

Canterbury’s two other Olympic Games representatives, Peter Wells and Bill Richards, made their final competitions at Rugby Park also. Wells is coming back to his best, and jumped with more confidence than for some time. He got up to 6ft 4in without any misses, but had two failures at 6ft sin before going over and was unsuccessful at 6ft 6in. A lightening and sharpening up of training with a few jumps at height to give confidence should be all Wells requires to round off his training. Wells will be competing for Britain.

Richards ran another 20 miles in the morning and ran two miles of a three miles race at the inter-club competitions in the afternoon. Although his time for the 20 miles was not as good as that of two weeks ago. Richards said that he was quite satisfied with his run. The time was 2hr smin.
