CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR R CLASS BOATS

C. PAPPS WINS IN HORIZON

Fourteen yachts competed in the sixth annual Canterbury R-class championships, sailed on the Waimakariri river on Saturday in a moderate to fresh easterly breeze. Group A. consisting of the faster boats—Salaam, Horizon. Vision, and Im-pulse-started one minute behind the remainder of the fleet. Horizon took the lead from Impulse and Tiptoes (G. Good) on the run past the starting line for the first time. From there, Horizon and Impulse had a battle royal all the way. and although Horizon had a slight lead, Graham Mander sailed Impulse brilliantly and was never more than 100 yards behind. Salaam, second to last on the first run, because of spinnaker trouble, worked her way steadily through the fleet until on the last run she passed Vision (A. Burgess) and Tantrum (G. Wilson), to finish third. Results:— Horizon (C. Papps) 1. Impulse (G. Mander) 2, Salaam (B. Wall) 3. A handicap event run in conjuiction with the championship resulted: — Mist (D. Walker), 9min, 1; Horizon (C. Papps), 3min, 2; Fantasy (R. O’Brien), 10 min, 3. A feature of this event was the excellent handicapping, five boats finishing within-one minute. A sweepstake event was held on Saturday morning in a light easterly wind. For the first time in Canterbury, and it is thought for the first time in New Zealand, a starting gate system of starting was employed. At the start, Horizon led Tantrum, Impulse, and Logic (W. All the place-winners were the new class Frost--plys. In a very light southerly wind, which turned to the east, 28 started in a sweepstake event on Sunday. After Salaam (G. Mander) retired after hitting a mark on the course. Vision led Impulse and Tiptoes (C. Papps) over the line. Handicap results:— Curlew (M. Pullin) 1. Jazz (B. Anderson) 2, Behop (R. Burt) 3. The North Canterbury I class championships were held over three laps of a windward and leeward course. ResUlts:— Clipper (C. Tyson) 1, Turay (R. Falkingham) 2, Air Raid (O. Reid) 3. The winners came from the Stewart’s Gully Sailing Club. There were 12 starters. Four teams of three boats from the Christchurch Yacht Club, the Mount Pleasant Boating Club, the Pleasant Point Yacht Club, and the Waimakariri Sailing and Power-Boat Club competed for the Ruddiman trophy for R-class yachts. In the first race. Pleasant Point beat Mount Pleasant by 15J points to 6, and Christchurch beat Waimakariri in the second race by 15A to 1. In the final, Christchurch beat Pleasant Point by 111 points to 7. In this race, both Impulse and Vision were disqualified for breaches of the rules; The Yacht Club team, which consisted of Horizon (C. Papps), Impulse (B. Wall), and Salaam (G.
