TOURNAMENT IN MELBOURNE G. PLAYER WINS BY SIX STROKES

Leading throughout the tournament, the South African, Gary Plaver, yesterday scored a convincing win in the £lO,OOO golf tournament at Yarra Yarra course. Player, with a total of 280 for the 72 holes, beat the standard scratch score by 12 strokes and won by a margin of six from the American, Bo Winninger. Player gained an invincible lead in the third round in the morning, when he returned a 69, to lead the field by seven strokes. The British open champion, Peter Thomson, slumped with a third round 77. and trailed the leader by 11 strokes at this stage. The Victorian professional. Ossie Pickworth, who was pressing Player closely, had a difficult time in a bunker at the sixteenth hole, where he took an eight. Player was a model of steadiness in the final round, in which he returned a one under par 72. Player’s four rounds were 66. 73. 69, and 72.
