COUNTY RESULTS

Several Very Close Contests

SOME MEMBERS LOSE SEATS

A feature of polling in the counties was the number of close contests. In many instances, with postal and declaration votes still to be taken into iccount and the validity of some votes still to be determined, there could be alterations in provisional placings announced on Saturday evening. In the Belfast riding of Waimairi county the county chairman, Mr W E Cassidy, is only 21 votes ahead of Mr p. A. Ragg. and m the Papanui riding the well-known Labour figure. Mr R H. McDonald, has a lead of only 12 votes. The returning officer for Waimairi County (Mr K. MacLachlan) said yesterday that there were still considerably more than 100 declaration votes and about 40 postal votes to be counted in the county. Quite a number of votes which deputyreturnin? officers had regarded as invalid might also have to be taken into account where the intention of electors had been clearly shown. In Selwyn County only 13 votes jeparate four candidates for the three teats representing the Hororata riding, in the fourth place on the provisional •ount is Mr G. H. Grigg, a sitting councillor who is 10 votes behind Mr G. H. Hall, who in turn is one vote behind yr P. T. Phillips and three behind Mr W. R. Oliver. At least 10 postal and declaration votes have still to be included. There is another close contest in the Sheffield riding of the Malvern county, where two councillors are required. One of the sitting members, Mr J. H. Jebson. is clearly returned, but the ether sitting member. Mr T. L. Jenkins. is two votes behind Mr G. E. Wright on the initial count, but about six declaration votes have still to be included. Mount Herbert and Ashley In the Mount Herbert county, where four representatives are required for the Port Levy riding, a sitting member, Mr W. S. Coop, is now in fifth place, eight votes behind his nearest opponent. There is a similar position in the Mount Thomas riding of the Ashley county, where only eight votes separate three candidates for two of the three seats on the council. The candidates are Messrs T. A. Judson. L. B. Burnett, and B. Mercer. Mr Mercer, who is a sitting member, is at present at the bottom of the list. Only two votes separate candidates for the second seat representing the Cust riding in the Rangiora county. Mr D. Ensor has 123 votes and Mr R. Gillespie 121. In this riding the only sitting member to contest the election. Mr G. E. Oldman, was not returned.

In Heathcote county the sitting member and former county clerk. Mr A. E. Amyes. was beaten in the Hillsborough riding by Mr C. D. Le Comte: in Paparua county Mr J. W. Saunders has been replaced in the Prebbleton riding by Mr D. H. Warren, and in the No. ‘3 riding of Halswell county Mr J. J. Macartney, who topped the poll, has displaced Mr J. H. Williamion. . The following are the results of polling:—
