CAULFIELD CUP TODAY

Redcraze’s Trainer Confident [By a Special Correspondent] MEI.BOURNE. Oct. 16 The Caulfield Cup, the first leg of the big double at the Melbourne spring racing carnival, will be run on Saturday and when final acceptances were taken today it left a field of 26 runners including most of the New Zealand candidates. The top weight, Redcraze. has firmed in favouritism and for the Caulfield CupMelbourne Cup double is offering at 16/1. Ray Ribbon is still also on the top line for Saturday’s event. T. J. Smith, the Sydney trainer of Redcraze, still thinks he will win both cups with the Red Mars gelding not with-

standing that he is liable for a penalty in the Melbourne Cup if he wins the first event.

Smith told me that he considered that the Caulfield Stakes would be a good test for the Caulfield Cup, and if any of the fancied candidates for the cup raced badly in that event they would be sure to be offered at greater odds. The biggest change on the market for the cup is the advancement of Baystone, winner of the 1010 Welter last Saturday The odds on this Brimstone gelding have shrunk 42 points in the week. In that period he came from thirty-fifth Caulfield Cup favourite to fourth favourite, at only twice the quote on offer about Redcraze and Ray Ribbon. The field for the Caulfield Cup, of £lO,OOO and £350 Gold Cup, one mile and a half, to be run at Caulfield on Saturday, with the last three placed performances and probable riding engagements. is:—
