Wrestling For School Boys
The schoolboy wrestling championships organised by the Canterbury Wrestling Association since 1947 are thought to be the only ones of their type in New Zealand. Entries have increased each year, and at this year’s meeting decided last week there were 60 competitors. Christchurch Technical College and Christchurch West High School pupils have dominated the competitions since their inception, but this year nearly every secondary school in Christchurch was represented, and it should not be many years before other schools are taking their share of the honours also. The association hopes that eventually wrestling will gain recognition as an official sport in secondary schools. Open to boys over 12, the championships have usually been spread over two evenings but this year they were held on a Saturday from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lower grades were divided into half-stone divisions so that no boy would be heavily out-weighed, ahd the other grades were in stone divisions.
As part of this scheme to popularise amateur wrestling, the association is arranging for senior amateurs to instruct younger boys at its new gymnasium in Worcester street
