ROAD TUNNEL TO LYTTELTON

CHOICE OF AUTHORITY NEXT STEP COMMENT BY MR W. S. MACGIBBON With the passing of the Christ-church-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Bill, the next step was for the election of the first members of the authority, said Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon, chairman of the Road Tunnel Promotion Committee. However, with the local body elections on November 17, it would be unwise to make the appointments before then, he said.

The act placed the responsibility for arranging the first meeting on the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast), and Mr Mac Gibbon had no doubt that he had the complication of the elections in mind.

As soon after the election as possible. the authority should get on with its task, for there was much to be done. Mr Mac Gibbon said. The act provided for the appbintment of a manager, a chief engineer, a secretary, a treasurer, and other officers required. Selection would need to be exhaustive, so that the best possible men were obtained.

All that was detail, he said. The main thing was that doubts and difficulties had disappeared, and that what had for a long time been a project was now a reality.

As chairman of the promotion committee, Mr Mac Gibbon thanked all members of the committee for the work they had done. He said the occasion was a momentous one for Christchurch and Canterbury, and he proposed, that it should be marked by a celebration. Therefore, he would like to entertain members of the committee and members of the other bodies which had been interested in the project, particularly those which were to be represented on the Road Tunnel Authority.
