ART TRAINING
Sir, —Van der Velden taught his
pupils thoroughly. His pupils were the art teachers of many students thoroughly well grounded in all that was required to pass examinations held in London. Many of these persons have led in various fields of art. both in New Zealand and abroad. Mr Sidney Thompson who worked most successfully in Europe did not allow his students to shirk any aspect of learning. observations of nature in careful detail, and broad general effects of atmosphere, colour, form, and structure. The interpretation of these was not left to slipshod casual renderings of vague emotional disturbances or superficialities. Fundamental study was required, of the outer world, and less of introspective indulgence. “Design study was strict discipline from first gaining an understanding of its evolution throughout history and its application (without interference with use), to mankind's utensils, clothing, etc; neither unbridled imagination nor aecident-Yours.
