CROSS AND HYBRID
Sir,—Many thanks for the right of reply. I did and do affirm the identity of the terms “cross” and “hybrid.” “G.H.D.” rushed out of the pages of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary to put me wrong, he. with his own pen. olaced himself in the position of having to agree that words meaning the same thing have the same meaning. Fearful of what he has done, he scurries back to the shelter of the Shorter Oxford, from which he has the effrontery to warn me against “incautious oversimplification in which all of us. etc.” Let him take that to heart.—Yours, etc., E. PERCIVAL. October 19. 1956. [This correspondence is now closed. —Ed., “The Press.”]
