Violent Gas Explosion
(Rec. 8 p.m.) HERRIN (Illinois). October 18 A shattering explosion at a gas storage plant levelled most of a residential block to-night, destroying six homes and seriously injuring at least 14 persons. No deaths were reported immediately, but two children were reported missing in the demolished dwellings Three or four of the injured were in a serious condition. The heat was so intense that the homes caught fire both on the side facing the storage plant and the opposite wall At the storage plant, the steel drums lay scattered on the ground, shredded bv the explosion. Police reported that a tank truck two vans, a station waggon and two cars were destroyed in the explosion
