M. HALBERG WINS 2000 METRES

BREAKS RECORD SET BY LAX DY OLYMPIC TRIALS AT MELBOURNE (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 14 New Zealand’s Murray Halberg proved a popular winner in a 2000 metres invitation event on the first day of the Australian athletic Olympic trials yesterday. He judged his race well, apd with 200 yards to go sped away from the rest of the field, held off a challenge from the Victorian, Ron Clarke, and breasted the tape going away. His time—smin 17sec —beat John Landy’s record Australian time by 6.6 sec. Ron Clarke, who hopes to be one of Australia’s representatives in the Olympic 1500 metres, was the first to congratulate Halberg after his win. Australia’s other 1500 metres prospect, Mervyn Lincoln, did not run. New Zealand’s two other runners. Bill Baillie and Bill Rodger, were unplaced. Baillie was well up with the leaders until the last lap, but dropped back, and was 20 yards behind when Halberg made his break. Rodger came on towards the finish, and was still running strongly when he crossed the line sixth.
