Cows Come First There was a slight delay in the evening programme when the Canterbury brass band championships vere held at Akaroa on Saturday. Two of the principal players of the Akaroa band had to milk 70 cows at Pigeon Bay between two events, the quickstep and the evening test selection. The Akaroa band drew first marble for the evening performance. As the important players were still milking when the band should have been on the stage, the contest had to wait until they arrived. After some delay the Lyttelton Marine Band offered to play first. By the time they had finished playing, the two dairy farmers arrived. much to the relief of their conductor. Advice to Aucklanders A former Mayor of Auckland (Sir John Allum) told the Auckland Intermediate Chamber of Commerce that the people of Auckland talked too much and that it was high time they took a pride in their city and knuckled down to doing something for it. Sir John Allum was answering questions after giving an address on “Some Major Problems of .the Future.” He had been asked if he thought Auckland would get a better deal from the Government in the financing of capital works if representation in Parliament were based on the revenue-producing capacity of each metropolitan area. “The trouble is not with the Government," Sir John Allum replied, “it is with Auckland. There are nearly always six or seven differing opinions about anything proposed for the city. The vital need is unanimity. No Government would negelct a united Auckland.”

Escape from Cell A youth detained on remand on a car conversion charge, escaped from his cell at the Timaru police station on Saturday night. He squeezed through a window 7Jin by lOJin in size. He had scraped the putty from the edges of the window and removed the glass and a wire mesh to escape. Aged 16, and weighing only seven stone, the youth, who had been in custody for a week after a Children’s Court hearing, escaped between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. At 4.45 a.m. yesterday he was recaptured by Constable M. Direen when driving a car over the Washdyke bridge, three miles north of Timaru. — (P.A.) U.S. Officers Shoot Deer Four deer and three geese were shot by a party oi otneers of the United States Air Force who spent the weekend in the Lake Sumner area. Lieutenants Al Gozur and Tack Deichler each shot two deer, Captain Wally Malone shot two geese, and Captain Warren Fair also bagged a goose. The unlucky man of the party was Lieutenant Ernie Schmid. He had a new rifle, which jammed at the critical moment. He was said to be “ci little bitter.” Children’s Homes Appeal About 1200 members of Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Baptist, and Church of Christ Bible classes took part in the annual Combined Children’s Homes’ Appeal on Saturday. All of the city and suburbs, including Lyttelton, were canvassed in the house-to-house appeal. The results of the collection will not be known until today. Last year £lBOO was raised. Nail Prices Increased An increase of 4s 9d a hundredweight in the retail prices of bright wire nails has been made in a new price order issued by the Price Tribunal. which comes into force today. The new prices range from 77s for seven gauge and heavier nails to 164 s 6d for 20 gauge. There has been no change in nail prices since November 1, 1954. Antarctic Ocean Floor Oceanograph soundings made by scientists along the continental shelf of Antarctica during the summer months have revealed giant caverns. Some are twice as deep as the 5000 ft Grand Canyon in the United States — the deepest canyon on the surface of the earth.
