ROYAL YACHT’S VISIT TO LYTTELTON
BRITANNIA TO DRESS SHIP When the Royal yacht Britannia visits Lyttelton in December, the harbour should be a colourful sight. The Britannia will dress ship, and the Lyttelton Harbour Board will invite all other merchant shipping in the port to do likewise. By day, the Royal yacht will be flying hundreds of flags, and at night will be floodlit. Advice that the Britannia would dress ship has been received by the Harbour Board. The secretary (Mr A. L. Burk) said the Britannia and her escort would arrive at Lyttelton about 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, and sail at 11 p.m. on Monday. December 17. The Royal New Zealand Navy has submitted to the board details of berthing for the Royal yacht. She will berth at No. 4 wharf West, and the escort at No. 4, East. The Duke of Edinburgh will reach Harewood airport from Norfolk Island about 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, December 16. He will travel through Christchurch by car to join the Royal yacht. The Duke is expected to visit the New Zealand Antarctic Expedition’s
ship Endeavour, which will be berthed at No. 5 West. Both No. 4 and No. 5 wharves will be barricaded, and the public will not be allowed close to the Britannia.
