War-battered Typewriter
A battered portable typewriter which will be taken to the Antarctic by Mr Maurice W. Cutler, the United Press correspondent with the United States Expedition now in Christchurch, has a remarkable history. In the last 10 years it has been used to write reports of four wars, and a series of atomic bomb tests. The typewriter has had so much hard use that the paint has been worn off in many places. It was lent to Mr Cutler by Mr Robert C. Miller, the Australian and New Zealand manager of the United Press, who reported the civil war in Greece, the wars in Israel, Korea. and Indo-China. and was also present at the atomic bomb tests in 1952 at Las Vegas, Nevada. “I was told to guard the typewriter with my life.” said Mr Cutler yesterday.
