FIRE AT ASHLEY BANK
HOUSE AND CONTENTS DESTROYED A fire which broke out early on Saturday morning completely destroyed a wooden house at Ashley Bank occupied by Mr George Taylor. Mr Taylor, who was in the house by himself, was awakened by a crackling noise and going to the kitchen found it alight. He escaped in his night attire. A south-west breeze was blowing and before long the building was ablaze. The Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade sent a trailer pump to the fire but it arrived too late to save the building or its contents. Good work by a bucket brigade got together by residents. however, prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings, including Mrs A. Hills’s store.
