CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Benjamin O’Brien, of Wellington, was elected Dominion president of the Catholic Women’s League, at the eighth Dominion conference held in Dunedin. Mrs O’Brien has been president of the Arch Diocesan Catholic Women’s League for the last 10 years, and was one of the two women members of the Child Delinquency Committee. She is a vicepresident of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Interchurch Council. She is also a member of the National Council of Women and a past executive member of the Pan-Pacific and South-east Asian Women’s Association. A presentation was made to Miss K. O’Connor, of Christchurch, the immediate past and also the first Dominion president of the league. Dr. Harvie, of Arkansas, United States,, who is on a world tour, met members of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Federation of University Women last evening at the home of the Dominion president (Mrs W. Grant), Konini street, Riccarton. Dr. Harvie before her retirement was head of the modern language department of the Arkansas Teachers’ College, where she taught French and opanish. This afternoon she will be the guest of the local branch of the association at an afternoon tea party The recently formed Millbrook Drama Circle, with its president (Mr W. E. Cook) as producer, gave its first public performance on Saturday evening, when the members of the Cambrian Society were entertained to an interesting programme. The visitors were welcomed by the president of the society (Mr J. G. Parry). Two new members were enrolled at the monthly meeting of the St. Chad’s Church Young Wives’ Group. Mrs H. E. Thomson was the guest speaker. Mrs Thomson and her husband. the Rev. H. E. Thomson, who is a New Zealand Church Missionary Society missionary in Tanganyika, have returned to Christchurch on furlough. Miss Rae Loader presided at the October meeting of the Avonside Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association Mr Earry Ferguson gave a talk and on modern trends in flower arrangements. Items were presented by Miss Alison Dailey.

Members of the Halswell branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers provided the programme for the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Pensioners’ Association. For their October meeting, members of the National Party’s garden circle held an outing to the Ellesmere district. where they visited the garden of the Rev. Father Taylor. Southbridge. and the tulip farm of Mr N. V Chamberlain, Ellesmere. A competition for a coat spray resulted as follows: Mrs J. Fiecken 1, Mrs W. H Tyson 2, Mrs W. Mounce 3.

The president of the Shirley Women’s Bowling Club (Mrs D. Black) officially opened the new season, and though the greens were unfit for play the first jack was thrown by Mrs E. Good and the first bowl sent down by Mr E. Good. Specially invited guests were the patroness (Mrs J B. Johns), Mrs I. Small, who represented the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre, and Mr G. M. Woods, president of the Shirley Men’s Bowling Club. Items were given by Mrs H Muff and Mr Woods, who also conducted community singing. Accompanists were Mrs F. Scott and Mrs S. Eyre. >
