SPRING GARDEN COMPETITION

PAPANUI BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION

Judging the spring gardens in the Fapanui Beautifying Association competition was conducted during the week-end. The judge (Mr S. W Gower) said it was difficult to get the gardens at their best in the springtime. The number of flowering plants was limited, and some had short periods of bloom. At present there was a lack of colour, probablv due to the season. However, generally there was a large number of gardens, although not in the competition, that promised a splendid display later. It was most unfortunate, said Mr Gower, that neighbours detract from many good gardens by their lack of community spirit. Overhead wires also spoilt the appearance of many otherwise beautiful streets, and detracted from the efforts made by the citizens, and in several cases the street trees had been mutilated because of the system. Placings. with the judge’s comments, were:— Mr T. Stewart, 4 Blair avenue, 1. Pleasing design but little colour. The house was nicely tied to the garden and the railway frontage was well screened by trees and shrubs. A maple was a feature of the open area. Mr R Proctor. 126 Blighs road. 2. The design and layout was very good and the house was well linked to the garden. The lawns were in splendid order and the polyanthus gave good colour. Mr V H. Reid. 17 Perry street. 3. The street frontage was well maintained but the shrub on the frontage was too dominant. The lawns were in good order and there was good colour Mr A. Roberts. 21 Paoaroa street. 4. The poppies, polyanthus and wallflowers gave a splendid colour harmony. .

Cither placed gardens were: Mrs E M. Johnston. 32 Raeburn avenue: Mr T. Jeal, 74 Proctor street: Mr J Rolland. 32 Perry street: Mr S Blakeway, 39 Proctor street; Mrs G. Radford. 201 Elighs road
