Passive Easily Wins Wellington Guineas

RACING

Passive won the Wellington Guineas on Saturday with the same elegant ease that marked her earlier success in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and Gold Trail Stakes at Hastings earlier in the season. The Trentham mile classic ceased to be a race from the time Mr J. A. Mitchell’s Ruthless filly ran clear well outside the furlong. She won almost at leisure by three and a half lengths, and became the first of her sex to beat the colts and geldings since 1944. Shahwan put in a long run from the turn to shade Purser and Lorica for second, but Passive had the race in hand by the time he reached the height of his run. Characteristically, Shahwan took time to work up to speed, and had only one runner behind him after a furlong. He had only stragglers behind him until the straight was reached, and it required a powerful run to get him into the struggle for the minor places. Passive is the only produce of the Foxbridge mare. Zenith, the best three-year-old filly of her time. Zenith won the Wellington Racing Club’s Desert Gold Stakes, and the New Zealand Oaks. Her briliant daughter is to follow the same programme and appears to have those races at her mercy. The Wellington Guineas was run in heavy rain. There had also been rain during the night, and the track was holding. The conditions probably cost the Takanini stable of F. and G. W. Smith, which houses Passive, a notable double. Passive’s stablemate. Barobar. ave a notable performance for a three-year-old filly to carry 9-2 into second place, a nose behind Ambition, in the Shorts Handicap. Ambition is another three-year-old filly, but carried 271 b less than Barobar. Ambition was the outsider, but one in a field of 17. Her earlier performances this season had nspired little confidence, but the Wood stalls, used for the first time at Trentham, helped her to overcome a tendency to lose ground at the start, as she had done twice earlier in the season. Backers were closer to the mark in the Wellington Handicap. The Masterton Handicap of a week before proved of outstanding value as a *,uide when Highlander got up to beat Zohov by a head. They were the principals in the Masterton race, but there Zohov scraped home from the faster-finishing Highlander. The Wellington Handicap looked all o\%r when Zohov put a handy break on the others outside the furlong. But Highlander responded magnificently towards the end of a long run from the ruck, and the post came a stride too late for Zohov. Llanisfair. though much closer to the lead than Highlander on the turn, was also running on half a length back. Marsden made a late appearance on the inner for what appeared to be an unlucky fourth. Highlander has always been regarded as a better horse under summer conditions, so his two latest performances have stamped him as a stayer of quality. Mr R. W. Northcott’s farm-trained five-year-old is by Underwood from the Probation mare Pervin. a descendant of Lady Zetland, winner of the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups, also the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps. Royal Star has been another New Zealand Cup winner from this family. Highlander could make another contribution to the family record if he is brought south for the New Zealand Cup next month. Highlander carried 17.“72| 10s tickets in a doubles pool of £97.906 15s. but there were only 543 5s 'ickets (80 oncourse) on the Highlander—Ambition combination, which paid £596 Is 6d for £l. Barobar was a firm favourite for the second leg. and the Wingatui-trained Ma Reine was next in favour. Ma Reine was eleventh. The on-course totalisator turnover was £154,192, including £17.029 on the double, a drop of £20,781 on last year

Brilliant Stayer’s Run Highlander started the last half-mile of the Wellington Handicap back near the stragglers, and the post was only a few yards away when he caught Zohov, which had sprinted clear early in the run home. Highlander had only Bomere, Kiaree Beau, and Gold Caste behind him at the end of two furlongs. Intuitive and Young Christine were then in the lead, and they stayed there all the way along the back to the half-mile where Zohov had moved forward to trail alongside The Vandal, and just ahead of Grand Bank and the Ric-carton-trained Jimmy ' 7 lash. Chateau and Llanisfair were following, and Marsden was just behind, but no', getting a good run on the inner. Intuitive was beaten after another furlong, and The Vandal reached the end of his run on the home turn, where The Wake had moved through close to the lead. Zohov was then alongside Young Christine, and Llanisfair and Master Proven were moving past the weakening Jimmy Flash. Zohov passed Young Christine well outside the furlong, and quickly drew clear. Chateau and Llanisfair were giving chase at the furlong, and Master Proven and Highlander were coming into the picture wider out. Highlander had easily the strongest run, and he caught Zohov just in time. Llanisfair was a good third half a length back, and Marsden finished brilliantly to cut Master Proven out of fourth place. Cardigan, not thoroughly at ease in the ground, improved several places late in the race for a fair sixth ahead of the weakening Young Christine. Next were Stylish Milling, Chateau. Grand Bank, Writer, The Wake, The VandaL Gold Caste, Bomere, Kiaree Beau. Jimmy Flash, Intuitive, and Isisford. Wellington Guineas

Passive and Shahwan carried £6418 of a win pool of £11,961 on the Wellington Guineas. They filled the first two places, but Shahwan was a distant second, a position he had to work hard for, while Passive was coasting home with a lead of three and a_ half lengths. Passive left the stalls quickly, and had only Raglan ahead of her after a furlong. Shahwan. on the other hana, had only Lorica behind him. Juventas reached the lead at the •ix furlongs, but was displaced another furlong by Lully. Passive followed Lully from the half mile to the home turn, but reached the front almost at her leisure. By the time she reached the furlong she was four lengths clear, and only the minor prizes were left for those leading vain chases after her. Purser and Aesop, about four places back on the turn, moved through going to the furlong, and Shahwan and Lorica joined in later closer to home. Shah wan’s powerful run from near the tail of the field could not be matched by the others, and it gave the grey second place by a head from Purser Riccarton’s other representative. which found the ground to his liking. Purser dwelt slightly at the start and had to put in a big run to get close to the front. Lorica’s fourth was well earned after a slow start, but Aesop (fifth) had his chance. Appeal Court ran past a few beaten horses for sixth. He was followed by Juventas, Raglan. St. Vincent. Vita Glow, Dully, Golden Cabana. Musketeer. Claret, and Mediterranean. Akatarawa broke away from his rider at

the start. He was caught, but the field was sent away without him.

The Second Leg Barobar earned full marks for gameness with a splendid, if unsuccessful, effort to master the light-weight Ambition in the Shorts Handicap. Ambition lasted only by a nose. The others were beaten off from the furlong, though third place was keenly contested by Nereis, Russett, and Lucrative, which were placed in that order.

Ambition galloped past Russett into the lead coming to the crossing, where Warwick. Brookside, Barobar. Domitare, and Lucrative were fairly close at hand.

Barobar set out in a lone chase after Ambition going to the furlong. On a firm track it would have been a successful chase, but the soft track turned the scales in favour of the light-weight. Nereis ran on from several places back for third three lengths back. Then there was a long neck to Russett, which just beat Lucrative. Domitare was sixth, and Wee Durham and Warwick were almost in line with him ahead of Royal Warrant, Rutillant. Ma Reine, Assembly, Hot Drop, Demolition. Nile Valley, Lovely Bouquet. ; and Brookside. / Results:— GLEN HURDLES, Of £BOO One mile and three-quarters. 3. 3—MARAU (21) br g 6yrs by Red Mars—Rauhina 9-0 C. R. Cooksley 1 8.
